Shinn favoured to take out the 2017 Nathan Berry Medal

AFTER amassing seven points on day one of The Championships, jockey Blake Shinn is the $1.35 favourite at Sportsbet.com.au to take home the Nathan Berry Medal.

Hot on the heels of Shinn is Hugh Bowman (+200 at Sporstbet.com.au), who currently has just three points to his name but given he takes the ride on Winx in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes it is safe to assume he will pick up at least an additional three points as the day progresses.

Hugh Bowman is looking to add his third consecutive Nathan Berry Medal to his trophy cabinet, and the star 36-year-old said it would be a “great honour” to take out the award.

“I’d love to win it again because it means you’ve done well I guess,” Bowman said.

“If I can win it again, it’d be a great honour.”

The Nathan Berry Medal is named in recognition of the former jockey who passed away in April 2014 and is awarded to the most successful jockey over the ten group races of The Championships as well as the two country finals.

Three points is awarded to for a win, two for a second placing and one for a third.

Superstar jockey Zac Purton is the closest hoop to Shinn in the standings, but given the Hong Kong resident will not ride on day two he is not included in the individual markets.

No other rider is under single figures and the next best option in the market is for any other individual jockey to win at $15.

Other candidates in the market are Kerrin McEvoy ($34 at Sportsbet.com.au), who is currently on zero points, Corey Brown ($64) who is on one point while Tommy Berry ($67) is on three points.
