Second bet suspension for Vic apprentice

An apprentice jockey has been suspended for a second time for betting on a horse race.

Liam Riordan, who is indentured to Leon and Troy Corstens, fronted the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Thursday over a $20 bet placed on a race in France last month.

He pleaded guilty to placing the bet at a hotel near the Flemington racecourse on July 17.

Riordan was given a six month suspended sentence except for the first three weeks where he will undergo counselling by Racing Victoria consultant Lisa Stevens and Dr Gary Zimmerman.

Providing he satisfactorily completes the counselling he can return to race riding on August 24.

In May Riordan was handed a four-week ban for placing a $20 bet at the Woolamai picnic meeting in April.

Jockeys are not allowed to bet on thoroughbred racing.
