Savoureux ends Guineas day on a high note for Kris Lees

THE drive from Sydney to Newcastle can be a long one but, for trainer Kris Lees, it’s a breeze with a couple of trophies tucked in the boot.

Lees left Randwick on Saturday with a surprise group 1 win in the Randwick Guineas courtesy of Le Romain.

His other win came in the Group 3 Wenona Girl (1200m) with Savoureux.

“We’ve got a great team at home and they’ve put a lot of work into both these horses so I’m very pleased for everyone involved,” Lee said.

“Savoureux had a similar type of run to Le Romain in the Guineas.

“She was three deep stalking the leaders but there was good pace on and she was very strong late.

“Her last run was very good and she was ready to win.”

Savoureux finished third behind Sultry Feeling and Peeping in the Triscay Stakes two weeks ago and went into the Wenona Girl as an $11 chance.

She held off the challenge from Private Secretary ($6) by a comfortable three-quarters of a length with the $3.90 favourite Flashing Speed another half neck third after leading for much of the race.
