What | Sandown Hillside Races |
Where | Sandown Racecourse – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171 |
When | Saturday, May 24, 2025 |
First Race | 11:55am AEST |
The Hillside track at Sandown is in action on Saturday afternoon, where a nine-race program is set down for decision. Having raced on the same track on Wednesday with the rail in its true position, the rail comes out 3m to take advantage of some fresher ground. The track should remain a Good 4 throughout the day, despite the threat of a shower or two on Friday leading into race day. The first of nine races is set to jump at 11:55am AEST.
Best Bet at Sandown: Otago
Otago could not have done much more first-up at Flemington, fresh from a 60-week injury layoff, when finishing two lengths off King Zephyr over 1400m. The four-year-old gelding produced some of the best closing sectionals and should only derive great benefit from that run and stepping up to the mile second-up looks ideal considering how he finished over 1400m. From barrier one, Ben Melham will need a touch of luck at the top of the straight, but with clear air, Otago should be winning.
Best Bet
Race 7 – #15 Otago (1)
4yo Gelding | T: Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) | J: Ben Melham (55kg)
Next Best at Sandown: Accredited
Accredited was arguably a good thing beat at Gosford first-up in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) after being held up for a run until it was too late when finishing fifth, beaten a half-length. The son of All Too Hard only saw clear air in the last 75m and did well to finish as close as he did considering the poor luck he received, despite gaining the run of the race behind the leaders. From barrier 11, Jamie Melham will likely have him one-off the rail throughout and if Accredited is anywhere near his best, he should have no issue overhauling his rivals at his first look the “Melbourne way”.
Next Best
Race 8 – #10 Accredited (11)
5yo Gelding | T: Joseph Pride | J: Jamie Melham (55kg)
Best Value at Sandown: Sephia
Sephia was one of the more impressive winners during the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival and should she replicate her effort when winning on April 30, she is going to take some holding out on Saturday. The three-year-old filly had to sustain a long run from the rear of the field and came with a wet sail to win in impressive fashion, albeit in maiden company. With a genuinely run affair over 1400m expected, the race sets up perfectly for Jordan Childs to find a bum to follow approaching the home turn, and with a similar finish, Sephia can blouse her rivals once more.
Best Value
Race 3 – #12 Sephia (8)
3yo Filly | T: Symon Wilde | J: Jordan Childs (57.5kg)
