SALSONIC has come from last on the turn to win the Queensland Guineas for trainer Jason Coyle and jockey Hugh Bowman.

The three-year-old gelding settled in last place behind a hot tempo set up from by Oak Door, before launching quickly around the home turn and quickly putting two lengths on the struggling pacemakers.

The son of Hinchinbrook ($14.80 at CrownBet.com.au) turned around some average form and given that it had won only one of its 14 career starts, punters had every right to overlook its chances.

Its racing pattern of getting back to last has been apparent all season, especially when it ran third behind Shazee Lee in the Hawkesbury Guineas, but the swift tempo allowed it to settle nicely and come with a burst finishing burst down the outside.

“If he can grow up in the mind he’ll be a serious horse in the spring this,” Bowman said.

“Half way through it I thought ‘why aren’t they coming back to me yet, I should be tacked on’ so I had to switch him on and get him involved.

“There’s no doubt this horse can gallop but I tell you what he’s got some growing up to do”

Bowman reiterated the fact that Salsonic still has a lot to learn, but its win was helped out by a hot tempo.

“He had a good think about it but look, aided by a ridiculous tempo early,” Bowman added.

$51 chance Volpino ran second with race favourite Niccanova making good ground late for third.

Jockey Anthony Allen said he got too far back and didn’t get a clear run at them.

“I was back a lot further than I wanted to be and it just didn’t pan out the way I thought it would,” Allen said.

“It was too late before I got a clear crack at them.”

Salsonic will now be spelled with a spring preparation in mind.
