Sacred Elixir keeps the Kiwi domination alive in the J.J. Atkins

SACRED Elixir had the flashing light after its run for sixth in the Sires’ Produce and that form shined at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The Tony Pike-trained gelding was an effortless winner in the $600,000 Group 1 J.J Atkins and continued the dominance of the Kiwi runners after Benzini won the Eagle Farm Cup earlier in the day.

Sacred Elixir, racing in the famous colours of Raffles Thoroughbred Racing, settled midfield and tracked the pace throughout the run with Zac Purton in the saddle. Purton, who scored aboard Cradle Me earlier in the day, showed why he’s one of the best jockeys in the world.

The champion hoop had a handful of horse heading into the lengthy Eagle Farm straight and he pulled Sacred Elixir around runners before the classy two-year-old spouted wings.

“He’s beautiful,” Purton said about Sacred Elixir. “Great size about him, pretty good brain, but he hasn’t quite filled into his body yet.

“Come spring time, hopefully we see a nice horse.”

Trainer Tony Pike confirmed that the spring is on the agenda and it has the strong staying pedigree on its side. The son of Pour Moi is related to a Melbourne Cup winner and the race that stops a nation looks a natural target further down the track.

Pike is looking at age-group racing for the meantime and will target the VRC Derby at Flemington over 2500m.

“The J.J. Atkins was the perfect race for him. The run at Doomben was superb,” Pike said.

“The VRC Derby is probably the long term plan with him. He has a real stayers pedigree.

“He’ll be a lovely horse when he gets to 2000 (metres) and further.”

Sacred Elixir, which closed as the $5 favourite at Crownbet, put lengths on the field which was headed by two despised outsiders.

$101 chance Charnley River ran out of its skin to finish second, just in front of $151 chance Heart Skipt A Beat. Godolphin colt Souchez wasn’t disgraced in fourth place and it should mature nicely into a strong three-year-old in the spring.
