Roydon Bergerson hoping for some luck with Lubaya in 1000 Guineas

LOOKING at the form line of Lubaya would put most punters off for the 1000 Guineas this Saturday in New Zealand, but the talented filly just needs some luck according to its trainer.

The well-bred filly by Rip Van Winkle has run two sixths and an eighth from three career starts to date, but punters only need to look at the amount of bad luck suffered at Trentham last start to forgive that form.

Trainer Roydon Bergerson knows he’s taking a significant leap of faith with the three-year-old in this Saturday’s $300,000 1000 Guineas, but he believes he could have the horse to upset $1.70 favourite Prom Queen.

“She probably hasn’t had the ideal lead-up, but I think she’s a good filly and she won’t be far away,” Bergerson told Horsebetting.com.au. “She’s had a lot of luck to date, but it’s been all bad.

“She had some bumps and bruises after her last run, but she’s all good now.”

Lubaya has been based at Riccarton this past week and the signs are positive for the $17 chance with CrownBet.com.au.

“She’s been down at Riccarton for a week and she has thrived,” Bergerson said. “She had a work out on Thursday morning and that went really well.

“I’m happy with her, she’ll appreciate the mile and she’ll be hitting the line with purpose.

“The only thing that worries me is Prom Queen.”

Prom Queen could be the next star from New Zealand to compete in Australia, but Lubaya does have potential to cause the upset and a change in luck could see a significantly different result this time around.

“She (jockey Rosie Myers) tried riding for luck last time so she won’t be doing that again. She’s drawn six and that’s a good draw, so she might try get one out, one back,” Bergerson said, who will target the Oaks all going well on Saturday.

“She needs to come through the run well, but she’ll probably have 10 days in the paddock and then we’ll set her for the New Zealand Oaks.”
