Best BetRace 8 – Shared Ambition @ $4.80

The Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes has attracted a strong field of stayers as they head towards the Metropolitan Handicap. One runner who stands out is Chris Waller’s import, Shared Ambition. The one-time Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup favourite won his first three starts in Australia before having a poor spring in what appeared to be very unsuitable races. He gets back out to 2000m here, which will suit him down to the ground, and the solid tempo will set up the race for him to run on over the top. He is drawn awkwardly out in barrier 16, but his natural pattern is to go back at the start anyway. The plan with him is still to head to the first Tuesday in November, so connections will be searching for a penalty to lift him up the ballot order. With James McDonald aboard, the five-year-old can get his first win of the spring and reaffirm his status as one of Australia’s top stayers.

Next BestRace 3 – Nudge @ $8.50

This Fastnet Rock mare returned in good fashion when third behind Prime Candidate three weeks ago at Rosehill as she scraped the paint to chase hard. The effort saw her clock the quickest last 400m of the race, which adds a lot of merit given the 1200m first up isn’t her forte. She now steps up in trip to a mile and has fitness on her side. She placed at Group 1 level over 2000m in the Vinery before running a very good fourth in the ATC Oaks in the autumn, so she will be in this up to her ears if she brings some of that form here. Barrier 15 is some concern, but the speed engaged should allow her to run on from behind under Jason Collett. At around the $8.50 mark, she represents great value.

One To WatchRace 5 – Kubrick @ $46

Yet another runner from the Chris Waller stable, Kubrick caught our eye at the big price. They’ve elected to run him in this race after withdrawing from Newcastle on Friday and an earlier race on Saturday, so we are trusting the camp that this is his go. Under Brenton Avdulla from barrier eight, he’ll settle in the second half of the field and hit the line strongly. He won his first two career starts before running second when wide throughout in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins and then winning the Bondi Stakes 12 months ago. His form since has been lacklustre, but the way he hit the line last start suggests up to 1400m, down 5kg and fitter second up should suit him greatly. If you shop well, you can find $46 available for this gelding.
