Royal Ascot 2016 Commonwealth Cup betting tips and form

Commonwealth Cup

THE Group 1 Commonwealth Cup is one of the newer feature races during the Royal Ascot carnival. The 1200m sprint is only in its second year so there isn’t much history behind it, but the three-year-old race has attracted a nice field of potential top-liners.

Quiet Reflection is the headline filly in the field for trainer Karl Burke and most of the money has been with the daughter of Showcasing. Punters which have been prepared to take short odds during the carnival haven’t had great success, so there is money to be made with the lesser-fancied runners.

The Commonwealth Cup hasn’t seen much action from punters so far. The only runner to move in the market has been Cheikeljack which opened at $15 and now sits at $12. The Myboycharlie colt is only one of three runners to have won at its last start.

We expect Quiet Reflection’s price to drift. There’s no doubting its form, but the confidence of favourites’ punters took a hit with both The Gurkha ($2.25) and A Shin Hikari ($1.66) going down as heavy favourites.

Royal Ascot Commonwealth Cup tips

Quiet Reflection has won five of its six career starts which includes the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket and the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes last start at Haydock. It defeated race-rival and $6 shot Donjuan Triumphant last start, but the concern is the winning times it has been posting.

It hasn’t broken 1:09.00 for the 1200m yet, but conditions are always tough in the U.K and running slick times isn’t always important. It does have plenty of class about it and it will have support at $2.75 with Crownbet.com.au.

Donjuan Triumphant is a three-year-old colt which has raced in some top quality races. The Richard Fahey-trained runner finished second behind Quiet Reflection last start, but it raced over 1400m in the Group 1 Criterium International at Saint Cloud when it finished fourth.

It had won three times over this distance prior to that and that included a group 2 in France. It’s the major threat to the favourite and the $6 is a great-value price at Crownbet.

Log Out Island is on the second line of betting at $5.50. The Godolphin colt is coming off a last start win in the Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury which wasn’t won in an impressive time, but the market support suggests it has a winning chance. Its best non-winning performance was a second placing behind 2016 Royal Ascot winner Ribchester in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes.

It hasn’t yet risen to the next level, but it could with a win in the Commonwealth Cup.

The connections of Washington DC should be respected and the double-figure price looks enticing. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt finished second at Naas last start and it brings a different form line to the other well-favoured runners. It has experience winning at Royal Ascot in the Windsor Castle Stakes and it ran a quick 1:09.93 last time out.

With top jockey Ryan Moore in the saddle, Washington DC represents value at $10 with Sportsbet.com.au and should go close to winning.
