Rockhampton racing tips

Racing in Rockhampton resumes on Tuesday with a massive 10-race card. Rockhampton racing fans’ eyes will be on the ninth event on the program, a 1600m Open Handicap just 11 days before the Rocky Cup over the same trip. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is out 7.5m for the entire circumference and the first race is set to jump at 11:10am AEST.

Best Bet
Race 1 – Charles Seven @ $1.40

Getting in nice and early here in what looks a put in, take out job in the form of race favourite, Charles Seven. Formerly with James Cummings in the Godolphin camp, the three-year-old gelding joins the Wehlow stable and is to be ridden by in-form hoop Ryan Wiggins. The form around the Hallowed Crown gelding looks superior here, which includes a close third behind the very smart Travest. Out of barrier 10, Wiggins should find a handy spot to the speed and go on with it in the straight. At $1.40 he looks a great chance to break his maiden and get punters home in the first.

Next Best
Race 4 – Tartufo Bianco @ $7

Tartufo Bianco lines up in the fourth event on the program in a bid to make it two in a row. The four-year-old mare found the front early in the straight at her last start under Elly Smith and kept kicking to hold Doom and Not Liable at bay. The rise in trip to 1100m will suit, as will the draw in gate seven. There looks to be a pile of early speed in the race, so Smith will look to camp behind the pace and finish over the top of them, unwinding in the straight. The $7 appears overs and we wouldn’t be surprised to see good market support on race day.

Best Value
Race 3 – Bethia @ $17

Bethia’s best run to date came at her last start and she was that luckless in the straight, it is nearly worth putting a line through it. Under Girish Goomany, she found the fence in the run and was held up at a crucial stage before getting out late to flash into fourth to be beaten less than three lengths. She was supported on that occasion, shortening late in the market from $13 into $11 at the jump. By Better Than Ready out of a Bel Esprit mare, she is bred to go quick and should have enough speed to cross them. With the rail out 7.5m, the lead could be the place to be. Interestingly, trainer and Rockhampton racing writer Tony McMahon dubbed her as the best outsider in the race in a preview he wrote for the Rockhampton Jockey Club’s Facebook page. The $17 is a steal in our opinion.
