IT was a day of upsets at Caulfield and it continued till the last race when Rhythm To Spare handed American import Fastnet Latina its first Australian defeat.

Fastnet Latina had won all four Australian starts which included a three-length win at Morphettville last start, but the softer track conditions took its toll in the concluding stages as Rhythm To Spare came along the inside to blow them all away.

The Michael Moroney-trained seven-year-old hadn’t won for over 500 days, but it was able to turn around an unlucky run in the Victoria Handicap on this track last start.

Winning jockey Jake Bayliss was confident following the race and indicated that form analysts should have cashed in on the $21.20 available at CrownBet.com.au.

“The real form analysts, they would have watched his replay in the Victorian Handicap a couple of weeks ago and if you watched him closely you would have realised it was a huge run,” Bayliss said.

“He was held up from the 600 onwards, he never got any daylight. If you did your form, he would have been one of the horses you got on in this race.”

Despite turning eight in the season, Bayliss believes Rhythm To Spare still has plenty to offer.

“He’s an older horse, but he’s flying in his track work and good vibes are coming out of the Moroney camp about this horse,” he said.

Trainer Michael Moroney stated that he nearly retired Rhythm To Spare, but he was always confident it would return to form.

“We were pretty confident that he’d come back to his best,” Moroney said. “We just about retired him after his last campaign.

“He was racing just for the place, but we knew he was better than that and we have him a long break and it’s worked for him.”

The Moroney Stables are running hot ahead of the popular Warrnambool carnival and punters could cash in if things continue.

“We’re going through a patch, we all do, but at the moment things are going well,” Moroney said.

The stable will have numerous runners during the Warrnambool carnival which starts this Tuesday.
