Redkirk Warrior ready for Everest after crushing Flemington win

Redkirk Warrior

THE Hayes and Daberning decision to find an additional The Everest slot for Redkirk Warrior looks to be an astute one after the seven-year-old scorched the field in the Bobby Park Stakes at Flemington.

The British-import – which was racing for the first time since April – was taken to the front mid-way through the race by Regan Bayliss and the horse did the rest, putting multiple lengths on the field to return $4.50 at Sportsbet.com.au.

Western Australian star Scales Of Justice rattled home well after encountering some early trouble to deliver $2 to WilliamHill.com.au customers while Land Of Plenty defied the significant gap in class between itself and the rest of the field to return $5.40 at Ladbrokes.com.au.

The win was all about Redkirk Warrior however, which moved from a double-figure quote at the beginning of last week for The Everest to equal third favourite ($7 at Ladbrokes.com.au), and David Hayes believes the horse will go to Sydney as a genuine winning hope.

“The stable felt he was going better than he was before the Newmarket,” Hayes said in the aftermath of the win.

“and I reckon that was an improved version of the Newmarket, when you factor in the weight that he carried.”

“I’ve been seeing his raw ability now for 12 months and if he gets the right conditions in Sydney it’ll take a very good one to beat him.”

The win showcased the horse’s Everest credentials, which arguably matched the class in which stablemate Vega Magic took out the Memsie Stakes a fortnight ago, and Hayes said both horses could be the best short-course animals in the country.

“When it rains, it pours. They are the two best sprinters I’ve had in a long time,” the trainer said.

“They’d be good in any era so it’s (going to come down to) luck in running and who handles Sydney the best.”

While not wanting to single out either elect as their best chance of taking out The Everest, the trainer believes Redkirk Warrior has the slight advantage over the stablemate given it has negotiated the clockwise track before.

“(Redkirk Warrior) has Sydney form from Hong Kong and Vega has never been raced in Sydney so I’d probably lean closer to this fellow because of that, but Vega is an incredible horse.”

“They’re just absolute, top-shelf sprinters.”
