Red Bomber lame after Gold Mile victory

Red Bomber was well-placed under the conditions of the VOBIS Gold Mile and the sprinter made it count as he defied a three-wide run to win the $250,000 race at Caulfield.

But a post-race veterinary examination found the gelding pulled up lame in the near-fore leg.

Trainer David Hayes said the horse was sore and would have to undergo scans for a possible tendon injury.

“And they’re quite concerned,” Hayes said.

The Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Red Bomber was at least 14 handicap rating points higher than any other runner in Saturday’s 1600m race but met them at level weights under the set weights conditions.

The Group Three-winning galloper, sent out the $3.90 favourite, was caught three deep but Damian Lane had the gelding in a position to strike and he sprinted to the front early in the straight and set up a winning break.

Zebrinz ($4.20) was chasing his second-straight VOBIS Gold Mile win but could only get within 1-1/4 lengths of the winner while Entre Nous ($4) was another three-quarters of a length away third.

Red Bomber added the Gold Mile to his win in the VOBIS Gold Sprint at the corresponding meeting a year ago.
