Recalculate has weighty task at Caulfield

The weight scale is against Recalculate in the VOBIS Gold Mile, but trainer Colin Scott is happy to give the gelding his chance in the $250,000 race.

Scott considered his options with Recalculate before deciding to run the four-year-old on Saturday.

“There’s a couple of horses in the race like Red Bomber who are up in the ratings, but we’re on the up,” Scott said.

“There was a benchmark 70 next Wednesday but we were going to have to claim, and I just thought he’s worth a throw at the stumps in this race.

“The horse will run well, and we’ll get a gauge where he’s really at and whether he’s up to this grade.”

Scott, who trains a small team of horses at Caulfield as well as working for trainer Henry Dwyer, is hoping for rain to help Recalculate’s chances.

Under the set weights conditions, Recalculate has 58kg which is the same as the other 10 runners in the race including favourite Red Bomber.

Red Bomber’s handicap rating is 14 points higher than his closest rival and 32 points higher than Recalculate.

“He doesn’t get in very well at the weights, being set weights,” Scott said.

“But he’s been carrying those sorts of weights in his recent starts and been performing well.

“I expect him to be somewhere around the mark.”

Recalculate has won four of his 15 starts but is yet to win in town.

Two of his wins came in his first two starts this campaign at Colac and Ballarat before he was third past the post in a 1400m benchmark race at Sandown on March 28 but was promoted to second on protest after striking interference at the 1000m.

Red Bomber, who upset Group One winner Trust In A Gust to win the VOBIS Gold Sprint at the corresponding meeting last year, is at $3.20 ahead of Zebrinz ($4.40) and Entre Nous ($4.80), with Recalculate at $11.
