Real Love lands Group Three Premier’s Cup

A Brisbane Cup trophy to sit alongside the Melbourne Cup is looming as a real possibility for champion trainer Darren Weir.

Weir achieved Australian racing’s ultimate prize when Prince Of Penzance won last year’s Melbourne Cup and is on target to win his first Brisbane Cup courtesy of Real Love.

Real Love enhanced her Brisbane Cup claims with her win in the Premier’s Cup at Doomben on Saturday.

Jarrod McLean, stable foreman for Weir, said Real Love was racing in career-best form.

“When you consider she’s coming off a long campaign in Western Australia it’s a real testament to how these horses respond to the beach work at Warrnambool,” McLean said.

“I flew up here on Wednesday and I was delighted with the way she looked so hopefully she can win again in a fortnight’s time.”

McLean said Real Love found the 3200m of the Adelaide Cup in March too far but is confident the mare will be better suited in the Group Two Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11.

Winning jockey Brad Rawiller echoed McLean’s assessment of Real Love.

“There’s no doubt the 2400m is her pet distance,” Rawiller said.

Rawiller had Real Love, the $2.80 favourite, travelling comfortably in fourth place to the home turn and edged past stablemate Puccini ($13) to win by a length.

McLean said Puccini would back up in next Saturday’s Group Two Eagle Farm Cup (2200m).
