Ranvet winner Our Ivanhowe to back up into the BMW Stakes

RANVET Sakes winner Our Ivanhowe will make the short turnaround to run in the BMW Stakes on Saturday, where the group one winner is a +360 chance at Sportsbet.com.au.

The 2016 Doomben Cup winner sits on the third line of betting behind Ciaron Maher-trained Jameka and Darren Weir’s elect Humidor, which are locked together at the $4.20 quote.

Our Ivanhowe’s trainer Lee Freedman confirmed on Melbourne radio station RSN that the heavy track the German import had been craving for so long since arriving in Australia back in 2015 would help the seven-year-old on the short turnaround.

“The horse licked the bin out, and he trotted him up and he’s as free as a bird,” Freedman told RSN 927’s Correct Weight on Sunday.

“Clearly he put a foot wrong and jarred himself yesterday, but icing him and treating him overnight and this morning he seems as sound as he’s ever been.”

Freedman said Our Ivanhowe will have a light week on the track, and if the predicted rainfall continues throughout the week in Sydney, then the horse’s rivals will have their work cut out if they are to defeat his runner.

“This is really unchartered territory next week – we’d normally not do this – but we know we went in [yesterday] with a fit horse so it’s not going to hurt him,” he said, confidently.

“If they have a wet week in Sydney, he probably won’t have a saddle on him for most of the week, go straight into The BMW, and good luck if they can beat him on heavy ground again.”

The four-time group one-winning runner will look to continue its quality second-up form, which has seen the stallion win once and claim second.

Freedman believes the horse’s ice-cool demeanour in the stables will help the team prepare star runner for Saturday’s race.

“He’s an absolute gentleman,” the trainer said.

“For a seven-year-old stallion, he’s a real ladies man, he loves the girls looking after him, and fussing over him. He’s a terrific horse, the most noise I’ve ever heard him make was when he got away at the pool one day and a two-year-old colt fronted him and he went off a bit.

“He’s like a seven-year-old gelding around the stables, he’s so quiet.”
