Race 7 – Black Magnum @ $4.20 Sportsbet
Taking nothing away from Spaceboy, but Black Magnum was a certainty when beaten last start on the Kensington track. He ran fourth, finishing only a length back after being held up at a crucial stage of the race. He goes up to Benchmark 88 grade here and is aided by Tom Sherry, who will take 3kg off his back to get him in with just 52kg. Drawn in gate six, he should settle on the outside of the field and be too good for them. His wet track form is good, as is his second-up record with two wins from four runs. He looks a standout.
Race 5 – Derbari @ $2.90 Sportsbet
Derbari was narrowly defeated by Zourhea, who he meets again 4kg better off at the weights. The speed doesn’t look overly hot, so Brock Ryan should settle close to the speed and have plenty left in the tank on the Dundeel gelding. Joseph Pride is flying at the minute, so we can expect Derbari to be wound up and ready to go fourth up this time in. He’s never missed a place on a wet track, so he will take some serious running down if gets the lead.
Race 9 – Stella Sea Sun @ $9.50 Sportsbet
Kris Less saddles up the five-year-old Stella Sea Sun in the final event on the program. The Redoute’s Choice mare is a genuine mudlark, with four wins and two placings on wet ground from nine starts. She gets the services of Louise Day, who takes 3kg off her back and is riding brilliantly in town right now. Barrier seven will see her settle in the middle of the pack and storm home. She is a winner at Randwick and races well at 1400m, so she should be right thereabouts.
