Randwick racegoers stop to remember Anzacs
The thunder of hooves has been replaced by the sound of the bugle as racegoers at Randwick stopped to commemorate the sacrifice of the Anzacs.
A minute’s silence followed the Battle of Messines Handicap (1400m) in Sydney on Tuesday, marking 102 years since troops landed at Anzac Cove.
Each race was named in honour of Australia’s war efforts, including the Anzac Day Cup Appeal (2000m) and Light Horse Brigade Plate (1200m).
Jockeys at Randwick and other centres around the country wore Anzac silks on horses carrying the number one saddle cloth.
Rachel King, winner of the Anzac Day Cup on the Kris Lees-trained Slow Pace, was one to salute in the specially made khaki silks with the Anzac insignia and bronze lettering on the sleeves.
