More than 50mm of rain has been recorded at the southwest Queensland town over past 48 hours, making its dirt track unsuitable for racing.

The Birdsville Cup, which was to be staged on Saturday, will now be held on Sunday as all roads in and out of the town are closed and unlikely to reopen until Saturday, according to race club president Gary Brook.
