Midweek Tips

SANDOWN is back after hosting the Zipping Classic on Saturday with an eight-race card this Wednesday.

The Melbourne spring carnival might now be complete, but there’s still some great punting action throughout the week and the fields at Sandown have stood up.

We have all the Sandown form and free tips for every race on the card, which starts with the Yarramalong Racing Club Plate at 1.30pm.

Check in with CrownBet for its Wednesday racing special at Sandown.

Race 1 – Yarramalong Racing Club Plate (1400m)

Om Nom went close last time out when second at Pakenham and it looks a top chance in a moderate maiden field. The three-year-old had been competing against some tough maiden opposition prior and another top effort should be expected here. Just needs some luck from the wide draw.

Ritchford deserves some respect after consecutive placings and it won’t have to improve much to figure in the finish. It has placed in three runs at this distance and the form behind Celtic Trail at Sale should hold up. Should be included at each way odds.

Race 2 – Argyle Maintenance Handicap (1000m)

Cardenas fought hard when second on debut at Pakenham and it showed its class last start at Geelong. The talented daughter of Sepoy won by six lengths at short odds of $1.75 and punters should expect a better price this time around. It rises in weight which is the main concern, but should have an exciting future.

Ariaz won on debut by two lengths over Motown Lil and it has since performed well in tough races. The Robbie Griffiths-trained filly ran second in the Breeders’ Stakes at Morphettville and it was making late ground behind the well-performed Sylpheed at Caulfield last start. That form looks great for this so it should run close.

Race 3 – Blue Star Group Handicap (1000m)

Deja Blue has a fair amount of ability after finishing second behind Lyuba earlier this year. The Robbie Griffiths-trained mare was a 2.25-length winner prior to those placings and its only poor showing came against the speedy Petits Filous. A nice resumption is on the cards.

Secretan is a last start winner which ran a good 1000m time at Cranbourne. The five-year-old ran 59.68 which is always a competitive time and it runs best at this distance. Carrying 61.5kg won’t be easy, but consider in win bets.

Race 4 – Thoroughbred Club Handicap (2400m)

Big Hammer comes into consideration on the back of two narrow wins. The Darren Weir-trained gelding was a last start winner at Hamilton on a heavy track and the son of Zabeel is bred to handle the rise in distance. Ben Allen takes weight off its back and it should run well again.

It took Fontein Lad nine starts to break through, but it did that in style last start. The Greg Eurell-trained gelding won by 5.5 lengths at Mornington in a one-sided affair and the increase in distance looks ideal. That win came over 2000m and it should enjoy going over further. Tough to beat with Nolen riding.

Race 5 – Mypunter Handicap (1300m)

Savaju is an interesting runner for Shaun Dwyer. The three-year-old filly finished 12th on debut before winning impressively at Bendigo second up. It then ran in the Red Roses at Flemington where it was outclassed by the likes of Spright. Craig Williams is a positive booking and the tote will likely give an indication of its chances.

Madam Mouton has had four starts for one win which came last start at Stawell. The Ciaron Maher-trained filly scored a three-length win as the $2.15 favourite and it gets another chance to impress in this. Its form prior was only average, but it has some astute owners and further improvement is expected.

Race 6 – Up For The Challenge Handicap (1400m)

Harbour Grey has been a touch disappointing in three runs back this campaign, but they were full of merit and came against tougher opposition than it faces here. The five-year-old ran fourth behind Pepperano at Flemington last start and it drops down from rating 90 to rating 70 for this. Looks very tough to beat with Ben Allen’s claim.

Gregington has plenty of ability and was considered good enough to run in the Carbine Club and Sandown Guineas this time last year. The Pat Hyland-trained horse has had three runs since the Guineas where it finished ninth and its last start placing was a good indication. It is warming up nicely this campaign and Damien Oliver is a key booking.

Race 7 – Le Fine Funerals R78 (1800m)

Prima has found some form this spring with two wins coming at its last four starts. The former New Zealand runner scored a solid win at Moonee Valley last start and it won on this track in August. It has plenty of talent over the staying distances and the 2kg claim will help.

Chris Waller lines up Encosta Line which wasn’t disgraced at Flemington in rating 90 grade. The two-win gelding ran just over four lengths behind The Chairman and that form should stack up nicely at midweek level. It was good enough to run eighth in the Queensland Derby and it can’t be overlooked here.

Race 8 – M & D Dillon Constructions Handicap (1600m)

Maternal is a capable type for John O’Shea which was only narrowly run down at Moonee Valley last start. The Street Cry mare was a winner at Pakenham prior and its form behind Sezanne and Lake Como earlier this year appear to be good form guides. It has drawn awkwardly in barrier 11, but Thompson takes 2kg off its back and it should run well.

Movie placed in behind Wheatsheaf Flyer last start and it subsequently won the Donald Cup on Sunday. It drops in grade for this and although it rises up in weight, Dylan Dunn takes 2kg off its back which will help. It’s never far away from the pace which will suit at Sandown.

Race 8 tip: Maternal to win at CrownBet.com.au
