The Queensland Oaks is a Group 1 race held at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm for three-year-old fillies at set weights as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
In 2017 the race has been moved to Doomben and shifted from 2400m to 2200m, due to problems with the condition of the Eagle Farm racetrack. The 2021 Queensland Oaks is set to return to Eagle Farm over the 2200m.
Despite not being the optimal time when the stars of worldwide racing come out to play, some absolute superstars of the turf have gone to the sunshine state and taken out the race.
The Queensland Oaks has been taken out by Winx in 2015, Ethereal in 2001 and Hall of Fame superstar Surround back in 1977.

The Queensland Oaks is a group one race that takes place at the tail end of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, so other races are usually prioritised before it at the betting agencies.
Given the parameters of the race are set in stone, the racing community invariably has a rough idea who the best three-year-old fillies in the country are and which trainers are prepared to make the trip to Eagle Farm.

Betting on the Queensland Oaks
The Queensland Oaks is not one of the biggest Oaks races when compared to its southern rivals (Sydney and Melbourne), but a number of superstars have launched their careers from the event.
Most notably Winx in 2015 launched her path to greatness following the Queensland Oaks win.
The Oaks typically draws a capacity field, and the barrier draw is incredibly important to your horse’s fortunes. Since 2011 only three runners have won the Queensland Oaks from a double figure barrier.
In terms form for the race, the Doomben Roses is the traditional lead up to the Queensland Oaks.
Nine winners in the period between 2007 and 2021 have come through the Roses, but only Scarlett Lady in 2011 and Youngstar in 2018 has been the only fillies out of those nine to have done the double.

- Having been aimed towards the Queensland Oaks throughout her autumn campaign, the David Vandyke-trained Gypsy Goddess managed to win her grand final in emphatic fashion. Having finished second in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet and second in the Australian Oaks at her previous two starts, the Tarzino filly was always going to take some beating. Having gained a perfect run in transit, William Pike had her moving 600m out from home and was under hands and heels until inside the final 150m. She needed to fend off Jerome Hunter’s Barb Raider, but managed to do so with relative ease to go on and score by a length.
- Edward Cummings’ joined his family legacy when Duais crossed the line in the group one 2021 Queensland Oaks. After falling short in the 1 million dollar ATC Oaks just under 2 months prior to the Queensland Oaks. Drawing barrier 11 the $2.80 favourite looked to be in a bit of trouble however with the steering of Hugh Bowman and the sheer speed of Duais, they were able to move from second last to winning by 2.5 lengths in-front of Charms Star and Signora Nera.
- The 2020 Queensland Oaks was cancelled due to the lockdowns in Queensland because of COVID-19
- The Gary Newnham-trained Winning Ways was gifted an economical run in transit when three back the fence to take out the 2019 Queensland Oaks. It proved the winning move, as she needed to dig deep to hold out two $151 chances in Dawson Diva and Lady Cuvee who were charging home late in the race. On the local tote the trifecta paid a whopping $183,652.00 thanks to a $21 winners, two $151 chances filling the minor placings and a $16 chance running fourth.
- For the second year in a row the hot-shot Chris Waller prospect saluted, but Youngstar didn’t have it all her own way as Egg Tart did the year before. Stablemate Another Dollar broke away at the 200m and looked hard to beat, but the gun filly surged hard in the latter stages to overcome her fellow filly, which registered a third-straight second placed finish.
- Egg Tart showed why people have been comparing it to Winx by delivering an easy Queensland Oaks win. The Chris Waller-trained stayer built its momentum throughout the race before looming into it down the straight and showing a destructive turn-of-foot. Read the race report here.
- Kiwi import Provocative was a $7 shot in the betting heading into the 2016 edition of the race, which made it one of the key elects in a huge field. Under compatriot Leith Innes, the Tony Pike-trained filly stalked the field for the majority of the run and was produced at the head of the straight and booted clear when it mattered.
- The Winx name has become synonymous with success in Australian racing circles, but the Queensland Oaks is when the then filly started its ascent to greatness. Despite coming into the race as a $1.95 favourite, there were question marks around just how great Winx could potentially be. The superstar put any fears to rest as it entered the 200m mark however, storming to the lead and torching the field to record an impressive win.
- In what was a different set of tactics for the Queensland Oaks winner, Tinto settled fifth in the running, but got shuffled back in what looked like wretched luck for the $8 chance. The horse kept coming under Timothy Bell however, and found the front late in the piece to streak away in the final 100m.
- Gondokoro went into the 2013 incarnation of the Queensland Oaks as a chief elect in the market and did not disappoint, taking out the race by just under three lengths at odds of $4.40. Sadly the Kiwi finished in the first half of the field just once in its six subsequent runs following the win and was retired shortly after.
