Punter wins big in New Jersey

Saratoga Mischief was the last leg for one lucky punter!
Saratoga Mischief was the last leg for one lucky punter!
A HORSE racing punter from New Jersey won US$471,124.50 on a five-leg bet that only cost 50 cents to place.

The winning bet at Saratoga included Realm ($12), English Minister ($4), Site Read ($22), Hey Bro ($25) and Saratoga Mischief at $7.

The punter needed all five to win the first five races at Saratoga to scoop the pool, and that’s exactly what happened last Sunday.

The bet was effectively in between a quaddie and pick 6 – where punters had to correctly pick the first five winners at Saratoga to win a percentage of the prize pool.

This lucky punter, who decided to remain anonymous, was the only winning ticket which means they collected the entire pool, just under a half-million dollars.

Andy Serling, handicapper for the New York Racing Association, told sources that Sunday’s payout was an extremely race occurrence – not because he selected five straight winners, but that they were the only live ticket.

Since 2013 – when New York tracks first started offering Pick Five – there has been at least one winner every race day, but Serling stated “there has been a single winner only a couple times in nearly two years.”

Punters in Australia have the luxury of betting into bigger pools for less risk. The Melbourne quaddie which runs every Saturday usually reaches into the millions and punters only need to select four consecutive winners.

Whilst the bigger pools are usually shared on many tickets, upset results can result in one punter scooping the entire pool.
