Punt Drunk : Tralee Rose Out To A Flying Start At Bagot Handicap!

Punt Drunk’s Daily News – Saturday, 2nd January 2021

Saturday, we love you. Regards, every punter on the planet. Today is an even better day than most Saturday’s, the hangover from New Year’s Eve is gone and as long as you didn’t do ‘hair of the dog’ your account should be looking a little healthier after a day full of racing on New Year’s Day. With 12 local gallops meetings to keep us going throughout the day, we’ll try and steer you towards a few winners and get your 2021 off to a flying start on the punt.

Speaking of a flying start.

Did we see the emergence of a star in the making yesterday? Tralee Rose deadset pissed in the Bagot Handicap at Flemington yesterday and sent the racing world into crystal ball experts. Sure it was an unreal victory, but what did he really beat? Are we being too harsh? Perhaps so, but with the talk of building up to a crack at the Melbourne Cup through the Adelaide Cup and Andrew Ramsden Stakes we tip our hats in advance to connections if that’s the path they go down and it turns out the successful path. If 2020 taught us anything, it is to expect the unexpected!

The Power to win?

It may be the off season in the world of footy, but Port Adelaide fans will have a strong interest in the fifth race at Caulfield tomorrow. Power Boom is a four-year-old mare trained by Glenn Thornton, and doesn’t he have a few well-known owners? The Power aren’t normally known for success in Melbourne in recent years, however part owners Ken Hinkley, Tom Rockliff, Scott Lycett and Jack Watts will be hoping that turns around on Saturday. She is a $31 chance in the BM70 for Fillies and Mares, despite a last start win at Pakenham. Anyone involved with Jack Watts knows he is a big fan of swimming (if you know, you know) and with rain expected on Saturday it just seems a match made in heaven!

Good luck to the connections, I know we will be having a few cold ones cracked watching the race unfold. This definitely isn’t our tip of the day however seeing as though it is $6.50 for the place could be worth throwing a sneaky pineapple on.

Opinion: Is this current crop of apprentices the best we have seen?

Apprentices
New Racing Victoria apprentices Tayla Childs, Tatum Bull, Logan McNeil, Alana Kelly and Madison Lloyd.

Jessica Eaton, Tom Sherry, Justin Huxtable, Campbell Rawiller, Madison Lloyd, Will Price and Jacob Opperman are some of the current apprentice jockeys making big impacts in the racing world over recent months. Eaton’s move to South Australia has been massive for her seemingly booting home winners at every meeting in SA. Madison Lloyd bought up 100 career wins at Kyneton on Friday, and the other jockeys mentioned and plenty of other apprentices are frequently pushing their more experienced rivals in each and every race. Gone are the days where you were hesitant to back a runner with an apprentice on board, now you can have a punt on them with a sense of confidence!

It will be worth keeping your eye on some of these jockeys PuntDrunkers as there are definitely going to be a few stars in the making with the new apprentice jockeys!
