Punt Drunk: Stars lining up for rescheduled Golden Slipper Day

Punt Drunk Daily – March 23, 2021

Hopefully you are all keeping dry and safe from this shit weather we are all experiencing down the east coast. It has been an interesting little 24 hours since we last convened, with plenty of whispers about some elite acceptances now due to go around in the rescheduled Golden Slipper meeting. With all of Tuesday’s races abandoned, there is not much to do except look towards the weekend. Do not let us down, weather gods!

Ollie adds to Golden Slipper book

Damien Oliver already had a couple of handy rides for the 2021 Golden Slipper meeting, but now his old mate Danny O’Brien has him booked for two of his stars. The hard to catch Young Werther is expected to go around in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas on Saturday afternoon with Ollie on board, and odds of $21 are available for the three-year-old gelding to win it. Oliver is also booked for the mudlark that is Miami Bound in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes. The four-year-old mare has had three wins from five starts on rain-affected ground, so she looms as a real knockout hope at $51 odds.

Remember Ayrton?

Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr maybe chips in on Profiteer in this weekend’s Golden Slipper, but they have an eye on the Brisbane Racing Carnival with the impressive Ayrton. Over the summer months Ayrton won his two races by a combined nine lengths and certainly sent tongues wagging in a BM70 on Boxing Day at Caulfield. The talk has been that the gelding will be aimed towards the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm. Another comment to keep track of was the fact that Price would not rule out a run in the Cox Plate this year if they can get a high enough rating over the winter.

Top-class runners set for Golden Slipper Day

With the postponement of the Golden Slipper race day, expect the likes of Nature Strip, Mugatoo, Sir Dragonet and Arcadia Queen to all race on Saturday afternoon at Rosehill. Nature Strip is expected to go around in the Group 1 The Galaxy, while the likes of Sir Dragonet, Colette and Toffee Tongue are all aiming towards runs in the Ranvet Stakes. Mugatoo could also line up in the George Ryder Stakes, but would it not be even more exciting to see the All Star Mile winner go around in the Ranvet Stakes against Addeybb and Verry Elleegant as well as the other runners mentioned? Add in Arcadia Queen to the George Ryder Stakes and it feels like Christmas could come early!
