Punt Drunk: Son of a gun follows in father’s footsteps

Campbell Rawiller

Punt Drunk Daily – 5/3/21

Morning, punters! How bloody good is it that we have made it to Friday?

With a bit of luck, your betting accounts are nice and juiced up to back September Run in the Newmarket Handicap this Saturday at Flemington.

If that’s not the case, the team at HorseBetting.com.au will make sure you are ready to go with a few winners today.

Campbell Rawiller signs for Waterhouse & Bott

It’s an opportunity of a lifetime for young Campbell Rawiller as he looks to follow dad, Nash, into a huge career in Sydney. The 19-year-old jockey has now signed with the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott team and will start riding for the powerhouse stable towards the end of the month. With his dad already renowned as one of the best jockeys in Australia, who is to say that Campbell cannot go on to a similar level of success? He rates frontrunners as well as any other jockey in the country, and for such a young rider he is someone punters can back with a lot of confidence. Having already had a solid relationship with Waterhouse following a victory speech he gave nine years ago (when 10 years old) after More Joyous took out the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, you would think Gai sees Rawiller Jr as a long-term investment. Go well, Campbell – we are with you the whole way!

Some better news for Brett Scott

The former jumps jockey now trainer Brett Scott has one hell of a fight on his hands at the moment. #PuntDrunk reported yesterday that Scott was kicked in the head by one of his horses during track work on Wednesday afternoon, which saw him put into an induced coma due to a bleed on the brain. By the sound of it, come Friday morning his doctors should be removing the tube that has been in his throat. While that is a step in the right direction, you would think this is only the start of a massive uphill battle for the popular trainer.

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

It isn’t very often that Craig Williams has one ride booked for the day and it comes up at 8:30pm on a Friday night. That’s the case with the Wendy Kelly-trained Winsum, who returns from a spell and looks well placed to begin the autumn campaign with a big win at Cranbourne tonight. Expect Winsum to settle in the second half of the field before savaging the line late.
