Punt Drunk: Now who are we gonna back when it’s bucketing down?

Jungle Edge

What a big week on the punt that was! We got through the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival unscathed and then had a good old Saturday largely thanks to a certain J. Kah at Caulfield. But now it’s time to dig deep and turn our attention to Morphettville for The Goodwood as well as to Brisbane for the Doomben 10,000 on the weekend. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for all of our best bets, value picks and quaddie numbers on HorseBetting.com.au during the week.

Muddy marvel Jungle Edge retires

Jungle Edge, the definition of a mudlark, has run his last race. The Mick Bell-trained 10-year-old was last seen finishing 14th in the Listed Wangoom Handicap last Wednesday during the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival. Having amassed over $1,700,000 in prizemoney from 89 starts and 18 wins, he has certainly done his job for connections. Remarkably, all 18 of Jungle Edge’s wins came on rain-affected ground, including three Group 3 events and another two Listed races. On those rainy winter days, he will certainly be missed.

Big week for racing’s glamour couple

Wouldn’t you love to be Clayton Douglas and Jamie Kah this week? The engaged couple just had their best week on the track results-wise and no doubt will have plenty of weeks like this in the future. Douglas took out the Grand Annual Steeplechase at the ‘Bool, while Kah rode five winners at Caulfield on Saturday. The pair are combining at Mornington on Tuesday in a trainer-jockey capacity, with Kah to ride the Douglas-trained duo of Prince Of Mercia and Runaway Train. A two-leg multi on those runners is paying a cool $12 with online bookmakers, and who is to say it won’t salute?

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

We head to Quirindi for our best bet of the day, and it comes up in the final race. The Kris Lees-trained Excelness comes to Quirindi following an all-the-way win at Scone over the 900m. She steps up to 1100m with Dylan Gibbons on board, and with the young apprentice’s 1.5kg claim, she looks to be too speedy for this field of fillies and mares.

Quirindi – Race 7 – Fillies & Mares BM58 Handicap (1100m)Excelness (#4) $1.90 with Sportsbet
