Punt Drunk: Glenfiddich maturing nicely after injury layoff

Scotch whisky - Glenfiddich

There is no shortage of fodder for this hump day edition of #PuntDrunk. The fields for Saturday’s Group 1 races – The Goodwood and the Doomben 10,000 – have been released, while old mate Bob Baffert is blaming cancel culture for his Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit testing positive to illicit drugs. Instead, we’re turning our attention to a popular runner on the comeback trail and a superstar mare who’s headed for auction.

Connections hoping Glenfiddich gets better with age

The Peter Moody-trained Glenfiddich is set to make a remarkable comeback this spring. Moody had revealed that he was worried his Group 2 winner might not race again following his injuries, but Ian Smith, the stud manager for Edinburgh Park who part owns the colt, now claims you cannot even tell that he had blown a tendon. There are still a handful of vet checks needing to be ticked off, but we cannot wait to see Glenfiddich putting in some ‘top shelf’ performances.

Can Arcadia Queen break Sunlight’s sale record?

As reported on HorseBetting.com.au, the recently retired Arcadia Queen is the star attraction at the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale later this month on the Gold Coast. The five-year-old mare was last seen running second in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield on February 20, but she has since been forced into early retirement due to tendon injuries. There is no doubt the three-time Group 1 winner will push Sunlight’s sales record of $4,200,000, which was set only last year. Oakleigh Plate winner Celebrity Queen fetched $2,500,000 at the Chairman’s Sales last weekend, which surprised owner Bob Peters. So if you have a spare $4,500,000 or so lying around, you can pick up Arcadia Queen in a couple of weeks!
