Punt Drunk: Can Classique Legend defend Everest title?

Friday is here, and so is another edition of Punt Drunk as we build towards our last metropolitan meetings of the 2020/21 racing season tomorrow. Today we look at Les Bridge’s big claim about his defending champion in The Everest, the ever-changing COVID-19 drama and the top jockey of the past 12 months.

Classique Legend as good as ever, says Bridge

He won The Everest in 2020, and Les Bridge is confident he can get Classique Legend back to the form that saw him take out the richest race on turf. The big grey had been sold to Hong Kong following his breathtaking win last year, but after a few failed attempts in HK, connections were quick to bring him back to Bridge in Sydney. The 83-year-old trainer has gone on the record saying if he gets the ‘Grey Flash’ up to 100%, he is not worried about anything.

COVID rears its ugly head once more

There’s more daily COVID cases in New South Wales than what we have had winners in recent times, and it has caused plenty of headaches for the racing industry. Plenty of NSW meetings have been transferred, casting doubt over the first Group 1 of the season, the Winx Stakes. However, it is in Melbourne that the biggest change has happened, with the entire Moonee Valley track staff stood down for the meeting tomorrow following a positive case at the drive-through testing clinic the club has hosted in recent times.

And the top jockey of 2020/21 is…

Star jockey Jamie Kah

If you thought we were going to choose anyone other than Jamie Kah, then you were wrong. The ‘Queen of Racing’ is a favourite of ours, and for bloody good reason too. Kah became the first jockey to ever ride 100 winners in a Melbourne metropolitan season, and despite the success of James McDonald and Hugh Bowman over the past year, she is a clear champion of 2020-21 in our opinion. Kah has taken out four Group 1 races this campaign, including the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes with Nature Strip and the Doncaster Mile with Cascadian during The Championships. If there is a jockey in the world you would want riding your horse, you couldn’t find anyone better than Kah at the moment.
