Punt Drunk: Back on the beers for Blue Diamond Stakes Day

Back on the Beers

Punt Drunk racing news – 18/2/2021

It’s a deep breath Thursday sort of feel today, punters, after what was a crazy 24 hours in the racing industry when we last convened. We are now only two sleeps away from Blue Diamond Stakes Day at Caulfield, which means we are not far away from our girl Enthaar competing in the two-year-old feature. In the meantime, here is today’s edition of #PuntDrunk.

Strathalbyn meet binned due to track concerns

Our best bet yesterday didn’t even get a chance at going around, because Strathalbyn abandoned its meeting despite a perfect day for racing. Following race two, the jockeys withdrew their services for the day after the winner, Jus Tin, pulled up lame, which was in line with track issues experienced during recent trials. Is time to add Strathalbyn to the same ‘get in the bin’ category as Mornington? Just another all-round shitshow, really.

Ollie shows his hand for Blue Diamond Stakes

It has been 17 years since Damien Oliver last won the Blue Diamond Stakes. He has finished second on four occasions, but Alinghi in 2004 was Ollie’s last winning ride in the Caulfield feature. He is hoping that his mount Anamoe – currently a $9 chance at Sportsbet.com.au – can overturn those fortunes this weekend. Oliver’s decision to stick with Anamoe has opened up a beautiful path for the Wizard of the West, Willie Pike, to jump aboard Ingratiating, who was dominant in winning the Talindert Stakes last weekend with Ollie on board.

Dan tells us to get on the beers at Caulfield

Punters, rejoice! For we can get to Caulfield on Saturday now that ol’ mate Dan Andrews has lifted the five-day lockdown like the champ he is. (Yes, we just champed the Premier of Victoria – live with it.) With the rules going back to more or less how we were last week, expect 5000 of Melbourne’s best to dust off their best threads for Blue Diamond Stakes Day. With three Group 1 races on the card, it may be a dangerous day to be a beer, but also a dangerous time to be a kebab come 6pm in the afternoon.

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

The Matt Williams-trained Fleurmosa has run the quinella in each of her past four races for only one win, so she is definitely due. She will settle up on speed, and her rock-hard fitness means she will certainly take some chasing down.
