Punt Drunk: 2020 strikes again in Kingston Town Classic upset

Punt Drunk horse racing news and views

Ahh the Monday blues are here, the boss is on your back and you’re trying to keep your mind on the job despite Christmas fast approaching. We’ve only got two local thoroughbred meetings to kick off the week leading up to the Hong Kong International Races meeting, which will take place this coming Sunday. Here are the top stories and tidbits from the weekend just gone.

This is why we can’t have nice things

Not sure what was going on at the winning post at Alice Springs, but someone clearly wasn’t impressed that old mate left the favourite out of the second leg of the Alice Springs quaddie on Sunday!

HAPPY HKIR SERIES WEEK!

The Hong Kong International Races are fast approaching, with four massive Group 1s to be run and won this Sunday. The Hong Kong Vase, Hong Kong Cup, Hong Kong Mile and Hong Kong Sprint will see some of the best gallopers in the world battle it out for some substantial prize money, with The Everest winner Classique Legend the odds-on favourite for the HK Sprint.

Massive collect for TAB punter

Imagine this photo being the result that won you $100,000 from a $20 nine-leg multi. Well, one lucky TAB punter pulled it off when The Astrologist saluted by a bee’s dick in the penultimate event at Pakenham. Every punter dreams of turning in an outlandish multi and making a six-figure collect. It wasn’t the only anxious moment for the punter, as two other photo finishes went his way with Shooting For Gold holding on at Doomben and Enchanted Heart doing the same at Rosehill.

The real question is, how much is he going to tell his missus that he won? A big decision coming up for old mate.

Pikey, why you do this?

Ahhh 2020, how you amaze us. In the final Australian Group 1 event of 2020, the Grant & Alana Williams stable managed to snare the quinella in the Kingston Town Classic, but for punters it was the wrong Williams galloper who got the chocolates. Every man and his dog had loaded into race favourite Inspirational Girl with William Pike on board and despite a massive run found her stablemate Truly Great to be too good on the day. So, 2020, you can just get in the bin.

Kementari bows out in style

How many times have you backed Kementari and he’s let you down? About 97 times? Because same. However, on Saturday the Godolphin galloper bowed out in fine style with a victory in the Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes at Ascot. It was the horse’s first winner’s cheque since he took out the Randwick Guineas nearly three years ago. We’ll say it again 2020, you can truly get in the bin, you crazy so and so.
