Planet America to continue Bryan Guy’s run
Consistent three-year-old Planet America is set to continue trainer Bryan Guy’s winning streak and earn a winter carnival tilt on Saturday.
Planet America faces a field of winter carnival hopefuls at Doomben.
Guy has been in great form since recently returning from a stint at Aquis Farm, near Beaudesert, to his original base at the Gold Coast.
He has had seven winners in the past fortnight including a career equal-best four winners at the Gold Coast two weeks ago.
Guy believes Planet America is improving enough to give him a solid back-up to his star three-year-old Eagle Way in the winter.
“Things have been going well lately and I hope it can continue with Planet America,” Guy said.
“He is virtually having his first start against his own age group. He has had no luck at all his past two starts, he has a good barrier and the top jockey in Jim Byrne.
“So, if he doesn’t race well it would be silly to look to the winter. But if he does perform, we can start thinking about a race like the (Group Two) Queensland Guineas.”
Planet America is one of two horses by Group One performer All American that Guy trains for prominent owner-breeder Ron Wanless and solicitor Joe Ganim and their wives.
Wanless has had dozens of winners including the Victoria Derby winner Amalfi while Ganim was a part-owner of multiple Group One winner Planet Ruler.
“They seem to have bit of luck and it would be nice to have a carnival runner for them,” Guy said.
Stablemate Eagle Way will resume in a benchmark race at the Gold Coast on April 16 on his way to the Queensland Derby.
“From there we will step up his distances and hopefully into the Derby,” Guy said.
Eagle Way, who won his three starts before a spell, is owned by leading Hong Kong trainer John Moore.
