Pfieffer excited about black-type bid

David Pfieffer is eyeing more black-type for I Am Excited to complement her third on debut in the Listed Woodlands Stakes at Scone.

The Warwick Farm trainer will send the three-year-old to the races for the first time since her maiden win in late May to run in the Rosebud at Rosehill on Saturday.

I Am Excited followed the highly-rated Debonairly and Lipizzan home at Scone and then scored at a midweek meeting at Warwick Farm.

An encouraging trial at Warwick Farm last month with this weekend’s jockey Corey Brown aboard led Pfieffer to take a shot at Saturday’s Listed race over 1100m.

“The trial went a lot better than I expected. She did it with ease,” Pfieffer said.

“She’s a very forward filly, a very smart filly. Her trial and her work has backed up some of her race performances.

“We’ll have a crack at the Rosebud and if she doesn’t hit the mark we can come back a peg or two.

“I know whatever she does on Saturday she’s only going to improve. From my dealings with her at track work, there’s more black-type in her.”

Pfieffer said assuming she performs to expectations in The Rosebud, I Am Excited would then target the Group Two Furious Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on September 2.

While I Am Excited made her debut in a black-type race, Pfieffer looks certain to resist the urge to challenge three-year-old filly Readycatgo to start her career at the same level.

“I don’t want to throw her into a race if she’s not quite up to it mentally,” he said.

“I don’t think she’s ready to take on experienced horses. I think she’s at a disadvantage before the barriers open.”

He indicated Readycatgo would instead make her debut in a maiden at Canterbury next week.
