Perfect Caulfield draw for Master Reset

Trainer Matt Laurie has no lofty ambitions for Master Reset who is set to take his place in a stakes race at Caulfield.

Master Reset is one of nine runners in Saturday’s Thoroughbred Club 50th Year in 2018 Stakes (1440m) with Laurie expecting the distance may be a little short as he prepares him for a longer race in Adelaide.

“I would think this race, over seven furlongs (1400m), a city stakes race, may be a task, but he’s drawn well,” Laurie said.

“He had a horrible gate last time and was posted deep, but it was a hot race and he should be better suited to this.”

Master Reset won the Cranbourne Cup over 1600m in early March and then wasn’t seen until he beat just one runner home in the Group Three Victoria Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield last Saturday week.

With Mubakkir and Walloon Region already scratched from Saturday’s race, Master Reset moves into barrier two on Saturday with favourite Charmed Harmony drawn immediately outside.

“From that gate he’s going to get a nice run,” Laurie said.

“He’ll be forward and as long as he’s in a nice rhythm I’ll be happy.

“Hopefully he’ll run well and then there’s a three-week gap into a mile race.

“It’s worked for him in the past, so that’s the plan we’re following.”

Laurie has selected the Group Three Robert A Lee Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville on May 20 as Master Reset’s next assignment.

“Given his rating is 95 it’s going to be a lot harder for him from now on,” Laurie said.

“He’s probably not a genuine Group horse but you get weighted out of handicaps.

“He’s probably best suited in country Cups over a mile.”

Three of Master Reset’s wins have been over 1600 metres.
