Pakenham racing preview & betting tips

Thursday night racing returns for the first time in the 2020 season with a nine-race card set down for judgement at Pakenham. A near-perfect spring evening is forecasted, and the current Soft 5 track rating should be upgraded by the time we kick off at 5:25pm AEDT. The rail is out 6m throughout, but Pakenham generally races pretty fairly, so all runners will have their chance.

Best BetRace 3 – Hasseltoff (#2) $2.20 with Sportsbet

Despite running into the minor money, we’re happy to put a line through this 4YO gelding’s first-up run on a Heavy 10 at Sale. He settled last in a small field and the winner was just too good over the concluding stages. In his debut campaign, he contested some tougher maidens than what he faces here on Thursday night. From barrier three, Michael Rodd should have enough underneath him to settle in a more prominent position this time. Hasseltoff clearly has one of the better turns of foot in the race and with a bit of luck in transit he will be hard to hold out.

Next BestRace 2 – Arabian Hussey (#12) $3.20 with Sportsbet

Caroline Jennings and Jason Benbow will look to build off the impressive debut by this 3YO filly at Bendigo when finishing third. She settled up on pace and took over early in the home straight but was vulnerable with 100m to go and got swamped late. She will only benefit from that debut performance and should get an easy time of it out in front here with little speed engaged. She remains at 1400m for her second-up assignment, and Benbow should have no issue in settling her up front from barrier two to help dictate terms.

Best ValueRace 9 – Misool (#11) $6.50 with Sportsbet

Archie Alexander’s 4YO mare was afforded no favours in the running during her first-up effort at Ballarat three weeks ago when travelling three wide with no cover, but she kicked clear over the last 50m to bring up her second career win. From barrier six, Jake Noonan should be able to get her into a nice position with a bit of cover in the running line. As long as that first-up run hasn’t taken too much out of her, she should be tough to beat in the final event of the night.
