P.B Lawrence Stakes all-in betting market and news

Suavito

THE Group 2 P.B Lawrence Stakes (formerly the J.J Liston) will run this Saturday at Caulfield over 1400m for a stake of $200,000 and Crownbet.com.au has released its all-in market for the feature.

The P.B Lawrence Stakes has been a good form guide for the major races later in the spring and although it’s only a 1400m race, past winners have included staying types such as Mourinho, Puissance de Lune and Victorian Derby placegetter Whobegotyou.

Mahuta is the current favourite with bookmakers following its third placing in the Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield on July 30 and it looked better than average when winning six consecutive races last campaign. Of those six wins included the Carbine Club Stakes, Sandown Guineas, Magic Millions 3YO Guineas and the Autumn Stakes.

The Darren Weir-trained four-year-old is expected to run well this Saturday, but there are many top spring hopefuls in the line up and punters can secure the early value at Crownbet.com.au.

Suavito has been well favoured on the second line of betting at $5. The Nigel Blackiston-trained mare didn’t fire in the Group 1 Queen of the Turf at Randwick last start in April, but its best form comes fresh up.

The six-year-old mare by Thorn Park has won three from five starts with two placings when fresh. It won the Group 1 Futurity after being spelled for 16 weeks and then the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes after spending 45 weeks on the sidelines.

After 18 weeks off this time around, Suavito should be primed to go and it looks the biggest danger to Mahuta.

Maher duo set for return in P.B Lawrence

Ciaron Maher duo Jameka and Set Square will return to the track to begin their individual spring campaigns in the P.B Lawrence Stakes on Saturday.

Jameka had a trial at Cranbourne on Monday and although it has been specked in the market at $9, Maher is setting it towards the Caulfield Cup on October 15.

“She never runs a bad race, but I think horses like Lord Of The Sky and Mahuta might run along a bit quickly for her,” Maher said.

“She rolled along nicely. She always tries hard and is very consistent.

“I thought she was more dour last time in after her VRC Oaks win and after she contested the Sydney Derby at the end of her last preparation.

“I think that will be the case again this preparation.”

2014 Oaks winner Set Square hasn’t raced since finishing fourth in the Turnbull Stakes last spring where it picked up an injury. Maher still hopes to take the mare to run in the $2 million Breeders Cup Fillies and Mares Turf on November 5.

“She’s recovered quickly from her injury,” Maher said. “She’s back into training and she’s come back big in condition. She’ll have a run or two here and if she looks like she’s on track then it’s a real chance (to run at Santa Anita).”

Set Square is a $17 chance at Crownbet.com.au.
