Outback Barbie ends run of outs at Doomben

Unlucky filly Outback Barbie finally had a race run to suit her when she won the Listed Mode Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.

Outback Barbie had not won a race in six starts since scoring at her first start at Doomben 12 months ago.

But she had been unlucky in most of her starts which included a third in the last Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January.

Back as though unbeatable into $1.80 favourite, Outback Barbie sat behind the pace before running down the leader Jami Lady ($17) by three-quarters of a length with a long neck to Churning ($17) in third place.

Outback Barbie was the third horse to run a class record on Saturday.

Trainer Tony Gollan said he had never given up hope of Outback Barbie winning another race.

“It is well documented that she has been unlucky. But she showed today what she can do and she can now press on into the summer triple crown races,” Gollan said.

“I think the 1400m of the Magic Millions Guineas next month will be perfect for her. There isn’t much of her but she is all heart,”

“They are running quick sectionals today so to come from off the pace was a good effort.”

Outback Barbie is now likely to clash with Zoustyle in the Gold Edition Stakes at Doomben in a fortnight.

Mark Du Plessis who rode Jami Lady said she had done a terrific job to lead from an outside barrier.

Stable foreman Trent Edmonds is hoping Churning can earn enough money to make the field for the Magic Millions Guineas.
