Our best horse racing tips for day two of The Championships

Weekend tips

DAY two of The Championships should pack plenty of punch for punters with 10 great races on the card at Randwick.

Winx is in action in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, quality three-year-old fillies run for the Australian Oaks and the stayers are out in force in the Sydney Cup.

The even betting fields give punters great value and Sportsbet.com.au will give up to $50 back if your runner finishes second or third in the first four races at Randwick on Saturday.

Sportsbet has already paid out bets on Winx remaining unbeaten throughout the autumn carnival, so sign up with the Australian-based bookmaker for more great deals.

Our first tip at The Championships starts with the TCL South Pacific Classic where we’ve picked out a recent maiden graduate which could be over the odds.

Red Hearts – Randwick Race 2

We wouldn’t usually favour a runner which only escaped maiden grades last start, but there is no standout bets in this race and Red Hearts is a value chance.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly scored by just under a length at Newcastle last start after running three consecutive placings.

All of its form has come on rain-affected tracks so that won’t be an issue and dropping down to 53kg will be ideal for the three-year-old.

The rise in distance is an unknown, but it battles on gamely in the straight and considering one of the favourites is carrying 59kg from the inside draw, we think the value is with Red Hearts at odds of +1300 at Sportsbet.com.au.

Pomelo – Randwick Race 4

It was hard not to be impressed by Pomelo’s last start win to qualify for the Provincial Championships Final. The Gwenda Markwell-trained mare set the pace and kicked strongly for a 2.5-length win.

The four-year-old made it four wins from its last five starts and the combined winning margin of its last three starts is 11.5 lengths – that’s form that stands off the page.

Three wins have come on rain-affected ground and its only other start at the 1400m was an easy 1.5-length victory at Kembla Grange to break maiden grades.

It stays down in the weights at 54kg which is ideal and punters should take the odds on offer before they drop. It’s currently +160 at CrownBet after opening at $3.50 and we’re expecting that price to drop even further as the race nears.

Glenall – Randwick Race 5

Giving a horse like Global Glamour weight won’t make it easy for Glenall in the Arrowfield Sprint, but one horse is on the way up and the other is looking to recapture its best.

Glenall hasn’t won since scoring a 3.3-length victory on debut at Canterbury, but it has since taken on good company and it produced an eye-catching effort for fourth last start.

The Les Bridge-trained colt by Redoute’s Choice settled back after and was hampered as they approached the turn, but it recovered and finished fourth behind Russian Revolution.

That run should be a good form guide for the Arrowfield and the break in between runs will have it fresh for this. The obvious danger is multiple group one winner Global Glamour, but it struggled in the conditions last start and we believe the value is with Glenall.

Back the potential future top liner at odds of $6 with Ladbrokes.com.au.

Bonneval – Randwick Race 6

Australian punters have seen a fair amount of the Kiwi runners throughout the Sydney autumn and they might be leaving their best till last.

Bonneval hails from the powerful Baker/Forsman stable which took out the Australian Derby last week with Jon Snow. Bonneval is a three-year-old filly which won the New Zealand Oaks at its last start and another top effort looms this Saturday.

The daughter of Makfi relished the rise in distance last start by settling back before taking the lead over the final 200m. Running on the wet track won’t be a concern as a Randwick heavy wouldn’t be rated dead in New Zealand and it has form on all surfaces.

It’s currently the best filly in New Zealand and there’s no runner in the Australian Oaks which has outstanding current form. Only Bonneval and $31 chance Waking Moment are last start winners which bodes well for favourite punters.

Bonneval is being well-backed in the betting and is currently +280 at CrownBet.com.au after opening at $4.60 throughout the week.

Libran – Randwick Race 8

Chris Waller lines up Libran which hasn’t quite fulfilled its potential this preparation, but it ran second in this race last year and that shouldn’t be forgotten.

The six-year-old European import is twice a winner at Randwick and despite fading out of contention in The BMW last start, it was making ground in behind Tavago in the Sky High Stakes.

Libran isn’t the easiest horse to follow, but with most of the money being placed on Big Duke, there’s good value with the other runners.

It will need to lift a touch, but this is it’s grand final and the $4 to place at Bet365.com looks worth a chance in the Sydney Cup.
