Ottawa Stakes betting preview

The Group 3 Ottawa Stakes is the second race on the card for Oaks Day, where a field of 12 two-year-old fillies will compete for a prize pool of $200,000. With almost half of the field being first starters and the remainder only having their second starts, there will plenty of interested onlookers. The 2020 Ottawa Stakes field will face the starter at 1:15pm AEDT.

#1 Fake Love (2)

Despite being a drifting favourite on debut in the Listed Debutant Stakes at Caulfield three weeks ago, Fake Love never looked like being beaten. She railed along nicely throughout and was given a peach of a front-running steer from Mark Zahra, who retains the ride. From barrier two, we expect Zahra to look for the rails, as jockeys tend to do early on in the career for two-year-olds. If she can replicate her performance at Caulfield, she could prove hard to catch.

#2 Tempest Charm (11)

Robbie Griffiths teams up with Melbourne Cup winner Jye McNeil as they look to build on this filly’s impressive debut a fortnight ago at The Valley. She was quite keen early on in that race but still managed to run on strongly from the back of the field. If she can settle in a more positive position, she could be a danger to the favourite.

#3 Mortal Witness (7)

The Dabernig & Hayes filly showed she had plenty of heart on debut, but she couldn’t match motors with the eventual winner and had Tempest Charm run past her as well. The filly out of Star Turn gets the winkers off for this assignment, but we are looking elsewhere despite a sound effort on debut.

#4 Cloudy (3)

The Godolphin runner was the best of the beaten brigade in the Maribyrnong Trial, where the winner and runner-up put a gap on the field from the 100m mark. She settled just off the pace on debut and showed she has a few wins in store if she can build on that performance. However, she will find it hard to figure in the finish here.

#5 Naples (1)

James Cummings and John Allen team up with a filly who showed plenty of ability on debut. She was held up at a crucial point entering the home straight but the found clear air and stormed home into the minor money. She was one of the runs of the race outside of the winner and now favourite for the Ottawa Stakes, Fake Love. If she can get a bit more luck in the running here, she could be the best value in the race.

#6 Butter Blonde (4)

The Waterhouse & Bott filly was an impressive all-the-way winner on debut on a Heavy track at Bendigo three weeks ago. She kept finding plenty in the home straight and held her rivals at bay to break through in impressive style. She gets into a slightly harder race and looks to lack a turn of foot that some of these have already shown. Despite getting Craig Williams on board, she will have to battle to hold a position late.

#7 Desired (5)

It’s a similar story for Tony McEvoy’s filly, who was an impressive all-the-way winner on debut on Murray Bridge Cup Day. She was a well-supported favourite in that race and got the job done accordingly, but like we said with Butter Blonde, she runs into a few handy types and will struggle to hold them out in the concluding stages.

#8 Autumn Rose (13)

#9 Dosh (9)

The first of the debutantes in the Ottawa Stakes was scratched from the Maribyrnong Plate on Tuesday. There had been a fair bit of market support for her on Tuesday, but connections opted to save her for this instead. She has consistently shortened since Ottawa Stakes betting markets opened and looks the best of the debutante runners. Off an impressive jumpout, the filly out of Rich Enuff looks to be the main danger to the favourite.

#10 Fabrikka (8)

A debutante from the Dabernig & Hayes stable always has to be respected during Melbourne Cup week, and this one has the benefit of calling Flemington her home track. She produced a solid enough jumpout to say she can figure in races throughout her debut campaign, but we’re happy to let her go around this time round.

#11 Lovin’ Feelin’ (12)

The in-form Maher & Eustace team enlists the services of the flying Jamie Kah for this filly out of Exceed And Excel who showed enough in a recent jumpout to suggest she may lob at a big price here. She gets the blinkers on for her debut, which is what the stable tends to do with its two-year-olds, but again we’re happy to let her go around.

#12 Nice For What (14)

Along with Fake Love and Dosh, the third Maher & Eustace filly in the race is another to keep a close eye on. She showed enough to suggest she will be a major factor in the Ottawa stakes, and she gets Hugh Bowman on board for the first time. Nice For What is also one of the first Shalaa fillies to go around in a race.

#13 Paper Dragon (10)

Despite a solid jumpout, Henry Dwyer’s runner is set to go around as the outsider of the field with the in-form Michael Poy on board. The filly out of Charm Spirit certainly has a win in store early on in her career, but we are looking elsewhere in the Ottawa Stakes.

#14 Single Tail (6)
