Olivier delivers Weir a Caulfield treble

Darren Weir held pre-race concerns over the firm ground at Caulfield for the improving sprinter Olivier.

But they were groundless as Olivier made it two wins from as many starts this campaign with an easy win on Saturday.

Ridden by 3kg claiming apprentice Ben Thompson, Olivier ($7) scored by 1-1/2 lengths from the $5 favourite Rich Jack with Belesron ($8.50) 1-1/4 lengths away third.

Olivier spent 10 months on the sidelines after having knee chips removed last June after winning at Ballarat.

He returned with a first-up win at Caulfield on April 30 before rising in grade on Saturday.

“The horse has come back in great shape,” Weir said.

“I thought he was a bit better on wet ground but he’s run well again today.

“He wanted to lay-in a bit but Ben got him into a great spot and with no weight on his back he was able to sprint quickly.”

Weir has picked out the Golden Topaz Stakes, the feature sprint race of next month’s three-day Swan Hill carnival, as a target race for Olivier.

The win of Olivier brought up a winning Caulfield treble for Weir after victories with Raw Impulse and Shades Of Bella.

Weir also had success at Victoria’s bush meeting at Donald along with stakes victories in Brisbane with Real Love and Howard Be Thy Name in the Group One South Australian Derby at Morphettville.
