O’Dea eyes Magic Millions success with handful of hopefuls

AFTER finishing third in the 2016 Magic Millions two-year-old Classic with Candika, Eagle Farm trainer Steve O’Dea is hoping to go two better in the 2017 edition of the race.

O’Dea currently has five youngsters nominated for the $2 million event, set to be run at the Gold Coast on January 14, 2017, including talented filly Colosimo, which won on debut last month.

Stepping from barrier six at the Gold Coast, the daughter of Foxwedge and Take Charge was convincing over the 900m trip, defeating Star Cugat by 2.3 lengths.

“It was a good win at her first start in a race,” O’Dea told HorseBetting.com.au.

“While she was beaten for speed and got off the bridle early, once she rounded them up she ended up winning soft on the line and she certainly couldn’t have been any more impressive.”

Colosimo is rated a $34 chance to win the MM 2YO Classic with Sportsbet.com.au and will be looking to secure a spot in the sales-restricted event when she heads to Eagle Farm this Saturday.

The bay will jump from barrier four in race two and O’Dea is expecting a solid display.

“I am really happy with her,” he said.

“She hasn’t had to do a lot between runs, but I have been happy with what I have seen from her at home and I would expect that the 1200m this Saturday will suit her better.

“Although she won, I thought she raced greenly at her first start, so she is going to take plenty from that experience.

“Obviously she has only won a provincial race so far so she needs more money in the bank to qualify for a start in the (Magic Millions 2YO Classic), but if she is able to get up on Saturday that would nearly assure her of a start.

“She definitely has plenty of upside.”

In order to win this Saturday, Colosimo will have to overcome a handy field including stablemate Scallopini.

The colt did plenty wrong on debut at the Sunshine Coast on November 30, finishing 3.4 lengths fourth behind Sista Act and Mishani Bullitt.

“I thought it was a nice debut,” O’Dea said.

“He is a colt that probably lacks a little bit of focus, although he did make nice ground towards the end of his first start.

“The jockey commented that day he wasn’t really concentrating on the job at hand so we have applied blinkers to his gear on Saturday to hopefully sharpen him up a little bit.

“I think he is going to be another horse suited over 1200m and he is much better drawn this week on the inside.

“I expect him to run an improved race.”

Scallopini is currently $101 to salute in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, although O’Dea insists there isn’t much between him and Colosimo.

“There isn’t much between the pair, although the filly has obviously shown potential all the way through.

“It is exciting when the young horses start to show ability, but you don’t know their full potential until you actually get them to the races and they show what they have to offer.

“They are both really nice horses and are probably going to be better next preparation.”

O’Dea rates his best chance of winning the Classic as Dream Kisses, an $81 proposition.

“Dream Kisses is the standout of my nominations – she was second at her first start and then was a winner at Eagle Farm her next run.

“She ran fifth last Saturday at Eagle Farm, but she made nice ground towards the line and she is only going to improve after a short freshen up.”

The favourite to win the MM 2YO Classic is Madeenaty. Trained by David Hayes, the filly won the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) on debut before finishing third in the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on November 1.

Invincible Star, which won the Ottawa Stakes, is currently the $7 second elect.
