NZ racing wrap: Hastings return for undefeated Jessiegee

NZ jumper Sea King
PROGRESSIVE mare Jessiegee will be back in action at Hawke’s Bay next month.

The unbeaten daughter of Alamosa and the Group-winning mare St Jessie furthered its preparation at Tauherenikau on Saturday when she galloped between races with stablemate Ringo.

Trainer Mike Breslin said the pair are good to go.

“I’m happy with both horses and they will line up on the first day at Hastings,” Breslin said.

Jessiegee was a debut winner at Tauherenikau and was again successful at Trentham in April before a break.

Sea King safe after Grand National fall

Top New Zealand jumper Sea King escaped unscathed after a tumble at Ballarat on Sunday.

The son of Shinko King came to grief when looking likely in the Grand National Steeplechase and was subsequently vetted and cleared of any injuries after the fall.

The race was won for a third time by Wells at the expense of the Mark Brooks and Missy Browne-trained Over the Yardarm, who also finished runner-up in the Waikato Hurdles.

Talented Kiwi galloper delivers the goods for Boss

Countofmontecristo has repaid the faith showed by leading rider Glen Boss after recording a brilliant win at Kranji on Sunday.

The New Zealand-bred son of Echoes Of Heaven successfully resumed over 1200m distance to take its record to six wins from seven appearances for trainer Michael Clements.

Boss had to waste hard to ride at 51.5kg and Countofmontecristo made his efforts worthwhile with a comfortable victory in his first appearance since placing third in the Singapore Guineas in May.

Boss said he always had a high opinion of Countofmontecristo.

“He was the best horse in the race and I was not going to ride him pretty,” Boss said.

“It didn’t quite work out for him in the Guineas, but he was still very gallant.”

Boss believes the horse has returned as a more capable runner.

“He has come back mentally stronger, while physically he’s the same,” he said.

“He was so relaxed throughout the run and he won a nice race in the end. It was worth wasting for a horse like him. You’ll do that for a nice horse.”
