No Fears For O’Connor Except One In Roberts Stakes

Olden is a rank outsider in the Schweppes-J.C.Roberts Stakes (1800m), but trainer Daniel O’Connor believes he can run a bold race and defy his +5000 rating.

Notwithstanding a winless record from 11 starts, Daniel O’Connor is positive Olden won’t let him down in the Listed feature, his first attempt in stakes company.

O’Connor’s confidence in Olden was strengthened last start when the son of Alfred Nobel ran a strong second to Lincoln’s Law after racing wide throughout.

O’Connor says Olden will be right in the mix and he holds no fear over most rivals, except for one, hot favourite and Lex Piper (1600m) winner, Western Empire.

“I’m not going to suggest he could beat Western Empire, but I think he’ll run a decent race,” O’Connor told The Races WA.

“Outside of the favourite, I’m expecting him to go well.

“I’ve thrown him in at the deep end, but he has never let me down.

“He is starting to mature and has overcome some feet issues.

“He is turning into a really strong three-year-old.

“The best part of him has been his recent hit outs.

“He’s had a little freshen-up after three weeks between runs.

“His last three pieces of work have been his best.

“I know he hasn’t won a race yet, but really he shouldn’t be a maiden.”

Olden, an $8,000 yearling, has drawn barrier eight in the 10-horse line-up.

Steven Parnham returns to ride Olden after partnering him in four previous starts.

O’Connor is also keen to see Awesome Rival step out for the first time

After three trials the Awesome Rock filly debuts in the Morley Growers Market Plate (1200m).

“She has been working real good and I expect to see a bit of progress from her,” O’Connor said.

“She’s in good condition.”
