Newcastle Gold Cup 2020 betting tips, odds & form

Mugatoo
Mugatoo is attracting plenty of interest from punters ahead of Friday’s Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup.

The Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) is one of the features of the afternoon on Friday and has attracted a full field of 16 and one emergency. Kris Lees’ Mugatoo is the currently $2.15 favourite ahead of Hush Writer and The Lord Mayor. Gai Waterhouse’s Hush Writer should lead, with Wyong Cup winner Paths Of Glory likely to push forward from the outside alley.

Friday racing tips for 2020 Newcastle Cup

Best Bet
Mugatoo @ $2.15

We are heavily in Mugatoo’s corner. He is the class animal of the field and looks to be drawn perfectly in barrier seven under Kerrin McEvoy. He is shooting for a hat-trick of wins and comes off a dominant win in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup at Rosehill three weeks ago. While he does rise in weight and give most of his rivals 5kg, he appears to be lengths better than them. Up to 2300m is a big plus as he heads towards the Metropolitan Handicap, and he should be rock-hard fit third up. He’ll land in a great spot from the draw and be too good for them.

Next Best
The Lord Mayor @ $8.50

The Lord Mayor looks to be well in at the weights after only narrowly losing in the Wyong Cup last start with 55.5kg. The son of Rock ‘N’ Pop placed in his only start at the trip back in July when second in the Grafton Cup, so he should run well. He has drawn to suit his pattern in barrier two, which should allow him to take up a midfield position with plenty of cover and savage the line like he has been doing lately. His dry-track form is much better than his record in the wet, so he should be in his element here and figuring in the finish.

Best Value
Paths Of Glory @ $12

Paths Of Glory was super in winning the Wyong Cup a fortnight ago and has to be included here despite drawing the carpark. We expected him to be ridden forward last start, but he actually came from last to get the chocolates thanks to a superb ride by Rachel King, who stays aboard as they shoot for three in a row together. Due to the wide alley and lack of speed in the race, we would expect to see King push forward from the wide alley if the gelding jumps well, which will give him every chance bowling along in front. The big grey is undefeated on good going and is bred to stay all day, so the step up in trip will suit. The Freedmans might’ve worked it out with the six-year-old now, and we could see him pop up in the Metropolitan as a great lightweight chance if he runs well here.
