A quality seven-race card greets us for Newcastle Gold Cup Day on Friday. The track is rated a Soft 5 at the time of writing, with the potential of an upgrade early on, while the rail is set in the true position for the entire circuit. The Cup comes up in Race 6, where plenty of quality Group horses go around, and the card ends with the Listed Tibbie Stakes in what looks to be a great entree before the main course on Saturday at Rosehill.

Race 1 – Reaching @ $1.65 Sportsbet
Kim Waugh would have been pretty happy when Reaching broke through for her maiden win at start six. She looks the best horse in the opener at Newcastle and gets the blinkers on for the first time. She tends to settle towards the back of the field, so a genuine tempo should not cause too much concern. Expect her to be giving the leaders a head start of 3-4 lengths at the top of the straight, but her turn of foot should be enough to get the job done.
Race 6 – Mugatoo @ $2.20 Sportsbet
Kris Lees has himself a genuine star in Mugatoo. The 6YO gelding is easily the class horse in the Newcastle Gold Cup field, where he is a short-priced favourite for good reason. His second-up performance in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup at Rosehill was remarkable, and he is well in the market on the fifth line of betting for the Caulfield Cup. He goes up 2kg and gets an extra half-mile from his last-start win, and Kerrin McEvoy should be able to steer him to a hat-trick of wins.
Race 4 – Akasaki @ $11/$3.30 EW Sportsbet
This Stephen Jones galloper took out this exact race last year and returns to a trip where he is unbeaten from two starts at the 900m. We are happy to have a play at nice each-way odds based on his last-start effort when running into a handy one. The query is that he hasn’t won since that win on Newcastle Cup Day last year, but he looks good value in this Hurricane Handicap.
