IT’S New Year’s Day and the team at Horse Betting is wishing all our readers a happy and prosperous 2019.

In our own inimitable style we’re ringing in the new year in style, with four of our best bets for the first day of 2019.

Let’s take a look at our expert’s tips for the day.

Flemington Race 3 – BM70 (1800m)

The David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained gelding Five Kingdom looks to be the best bet of the day Flemington.

Recording three wins from six starts, the four-year-old has never missed a placing in his career and has been slowly progressing up in distance. We feel he is ideally suited to the 1800m trip.

The horse was only just over a length away from smart winner Declares War on December 15, which should bode well for a strong run here.

The 3kg Michael Poy claim will see the gelding carrying significantly less than the topweight allotment, and we’re confident the Lindsay Park adds a fourth win at the eighth start.

Five Kingdom is a $3.30 chance at online bookmaker BetEasy

Ellerslie Race 9 – Railway Stakes (1200m)

Only a bad draw will hold back Melody Belle from winning the Group 1 Railway Stakes.

Melody Belle drew barrier 15 coming into the 2019 Railway Stakes, but we’re confident the first-up runner will make it four wins on the trot in Tuesday’s feature. The mare finished off the last preparation by winning the Group 1 Horlicks Plate at Hastings and has been tuned up with two trials.

With a slight piece of lack from the widest barrier she’s confronted Melody Belle should deliver a strong showing and win the Railway.

Randwick Race 2 – BM70 (1550m)

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott gelding steps back up to benchmark 70 level following a solid showing at Wyong on December 19.

The four-year-old recorded a half length win at the mile at BM64 level as a favourite, and returns back to the city grade following a disappointing sixth at Warwick Farm at the beginning of the month.

With a good barrier draw and stable favourite Adam Hyeronimus on board we’re predicting a success for Zeppelin.

Inverrell Race 5 – Sapphire City Eng. Inv Shorts (1010m)

The resuming The Lion should torch this field if he resumes in good order.

The Lion took out the Randwick 3yo+ Highway-C3 in October, the gelding runs for the first time since that event.

The horse looks a class above the majority in this field, and from barrier six he will have no issues in the run. We’re confident The Lion delivers in this one.

The Lion is at $3.30 with the online bookmakers
