New tactics for consistent Champagne Jet

Trainer Toby Edmonds believes changing tactics on Champagne Jet is the key to a return to form.

A change of riding tactics seems to have been the key to classy filly Champagne Jet returning to the winners’ list.

Champagne Jet has been one of the most consistent two-year-olds in Queensland with a win and five minor placings from seven starts.

Her only unplaced run was in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic when she led to the turn but faded.

In her first six starts Champagne Jet either led or was on the pace.

After Champagne Jet was run down after leading at the Gold Coast over 1100m in late June it raised doubts about her at 1200m.

Trainer Toby Edmonds elected to try new tactics on her and ride the filly off the pace.

Over 1200m at Doomben two weeks ago, Champagne Jet dropped to the tail of the field but charged home to finish second to the smart Karaga.

Edmonds was pleased with the run and again has Champagne Jet in a 1200m race, the Ascot Green Handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

“Her last start was strong and she has drawn the rails on Saturday,” Edmonds said.

Champagne Jet is raced by an all women 2K Thoroughbreds syndicate and has more than repaid her $22,000 purchase price with $141,000 prize money.

Champagne Jet is by Jet Spur out of the well-bred Jezzamine, making her a valuable broodmare prospect.
