New Chris Waller stable opens Qld account

Chris Waller has trained his first winner from his new Gold Coast satellite stable with Devil Hawk scoring at Doomben.

Devil Hawk ($8.50) was too strong for Stanley ($3.90), winning by 2 1/4 lengths in the Tim Bell Memorial (2200m).

The five-year-old’s stablemate, the $2.60 favourite Loving Home, finished 1-1/2 lengths away third.

Waller’s Queensland manager Paul Shailer said Devil Hawk fitted the profile of the horses who would be sent to Queensland.

“He is a stayer who was a couple of lengths off them in Sydney but is well placed here,” Shailer said.

Shailer said Waller was keen to tackle staying races and to also build up his two-year-old numbers with the Magic Millions Classic in mind.

“We had 15 horses up her in the winter and it is hard to get stables for that number,” Shailer said.

Shailer was Waller’s right-hand man for 10 years before returning to New Zealand where he was a successful trainer.

“I have been back with Chris for a month and I’m really looking forward to the new challenges,” he said.
