Naval Fleet just had the worst loss of 2018 at Hastings

Naval Fleet hits the barrier at Hastings when victory looked all but assured.

SOMETIMES punting is a cruel mistress, as backers of Naval Fleet found out today at Hastings.

Coming into the third event on the card Naval Fleet was almost unbackable, jumping as a $1.35 favourite at online bookmaker Sportsbet to break the maiden tag at the third attempt.

The punters would have been getting in the queue as the 200m mark approached, with Naval Fleet holding a comfortable two length lead on the fast-finishing second favourite Together.

In what looms as a contender for the sickest beat of 2018 however, the filly darted to her left and struck the rail, launching the jockey Sam Collett off in the process.

Together ended up streaking away to win and return $4 at online bookmaker BetEasy.

Thankfully both horse and jockey were fine after the race, which is more than we can say for the punters which took the shorts.
