Mullins chasing Nicholls in championship

Willie Mullins has clawed back a fraction of the deficit in the battle for the British jumps trainers’ championship by saddling the first two home in a hurdle at Perth.

The Irish trainer held a commanding lead over Paul Nicholls before last weekend but it has been one-way traffic since.

Mullins now trails Nicholls by around STG43,200 ($A79,455) with the National Hunt season to end at Sandown on Saturday.

He is looking to become the first Irish-based trainer to claim the British title since the legendary Vincent O’Brien in the 1950s.

“We are back in the game after this race, but we still have a hill to climb and I think we are going to need a four-timer on Saturday if we are to win the championship,” Mullins said.

“I would say we are up against it but we are going to give it our best shot.”
