Mr Money Bags chases third Flemington win

Trainer Robbie Griffiths is hoping Mr Money Bags can make it consecutive wins at Flemngton.

Mr Money Bags has been living up to his name in recent months and will attempt to add to his record when he runs at Flemington.

If successful in Saturday’s Murray Cox Handicap (1600m), Mr Money Bags will be a three-time winner at the inner city track.

Mr Money Bags began his career last November and has notched four victories, all on city courses, including two from his past three starts.

Trainer Robbie Griffiths can’t see why the gelding can’t make it back-to-back victories after taking out the Silver Bowl Final over the course and distance on July 7.

“We set him for the Silver Bowl which he won, but all of his runs have been good because he’s drawn wide barriers on every occasion bar twice,” Griffiths said.

“One was at Flemington in January when he won and the other was when he won the Silver Bowl.

“So from barrier two he should get a good run again but the question for him now is that he’s up to 59.5 (kilos).

“Other than that he’s won at the track twice, he’s won at the distance, he’s trained on well, galloped well, so if he can overcome the weight, he’s right in it.”

Saturday’s performance will determine whether Griffiths runs Mr Money Bags in the $150,000 VOBIS Gold Reef at Caulfield on July 28.

“Otherwise he’ll have a rest and get ready for the four and five-year-old race at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week and then head to the Gold Coast, if he’s good enough, as he’s a Magic Millions horse,” Griffiths said.

“We’ll see what happens.”
